Hi, I’m Sunny…
In November 2023, my life changed in an instant. I suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke that affected my speech and mobility on my dominant side. Instead of stepping away from creativity, I turned to painting as a way to express myself, reconnect with my creative instincts, and learn to work with my non-dominant left hand.
I paint primarily in acrylics on canvas and canvas board, working in thematic series that range from memory, imagination, photography, and movie stills, rooted in a lifelong love of art, movies and storytelling. I aim to create work that invites people to look a little closer and discover something unexpected.
More than anything, I paint what brings me and the people around me joy. Painting has become a way for me to cope with recovery, keep my creative mind moving, and celebrate the simple happiness of being alive. Since my first painting in August 2025, when my brain was finally able to hold focus for longer periods, I have completed more than 175 paintings (and counting). Each one is meaningful to me. Together, they tell a story of resilience, curiosity, and finding my way forward—one canvas at a time.
Before my stroke, I spent eight years as a Creative Director at Google and more than two decades in advertising. I earned a Master of Graphic Design from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Ohio University, where I also studied oil painting and photography. Growing up in Hong Kong, I studied traditional Chinese ink wash painting (水墨画), a practice grounded in observation, balance, restraint, and disciplined brushwork. Its emphasis on patience, simplicity, and finding expression through every stroke has deeply shaped my artistic philosophy and continues to influence the way I approach my work today.
Having grown up in Hong Kong, I've spent the last 25-plus years living in New York City.
“We are deeply grateful to my family, friends, therapist, doctors, nurses, former colleagues, and every GoFundMe supporter. Rebuilding my life and creative practice wouldn't be possible without your belief in me—thank you for standing by my side.”
